As I stumbled upon a few weighty tomes like “Pachinko,” “Poorly Made in China,” and “A God Who Hates Women,” I found myself craving something lighter and more uplifting to read. I specifically wanted a non-fiction book by an Indian author, and that’s when I discovered two gems: Ruskin Bond’s “How to Be a Writer” and Uma Rajagopal’s “Reflections: A Collection of 5-Minute Essays.”

While I’m still savouring every page of Mr. Bond’s delightful wisdom, I’ve already had the pleasure of completing Ms. Rajagopal’s book. I must say, it was a truly refreshing and delightful read!

What is the book all about?

“Reflections: A Collection of 5-Minute Essays” is all about taking a personal journey through the author’s world of thought. This book comprises 18 brief essays that are like snapshots of the author’s life experiences and contemplations. In these essays, the author reveals her profound intellect and her gift for introspection as she delves into the significance of everyday occurrences.

From the mundane to the extraordinary, these musings touch on moments that have left an indelible mark on the author. They’ve not only left an impression but have also shifted her perspective on life.

Each essay offers a window into the author’s mind, sharing her unique way of finding meaning in the world around her. It’s a beautiful tapestry of thoughts and reflections that invite readers to ponder life’s intricacies, both big and small, in a deeply personal and thought-provoking manner.

Who can read?

If you’re like me and have a soft spot for nonfiction that delves into life’s profound moments, everyday wisdom, and musings on gratitude, “Reflections: A Collection of 5-Minute Essays” is a delightful find. It’s not the kind of book for those seeking something overly serious. Instead, it’s like a gentle, easy-breezy journey that caters to every reader, offering a dash of something special for each of us to savour.

What’s more?

And there’s something more to this book than just the author’s personal reflections. These anecdotes and musings have the power to impart invaluable life lessons. They gently guide you toward embracing life with open arms and cultivating a mindset steeped in optimism.

In its pages, you’ll find an invitation to embark on a deeper exploration of your own life journey. It’s like hopping on a roller coaster, with all its exhilarating highs and inevitable lows, and relishing the entire ride. This book encourages you to savour every twist and turn, reminding you that we only have one life, and it’s meant to be cherished to the fullest.

Some of the themes explored in the book

Some of the themes that really struck a chord with me in this book were deeply personal. One of the standout themes is that of motherhood, and the author’s intimate exploration of her own experiences as a mother.

In one of these delightful, bite-sized essays, she even shares a special note she wrote to her child just a day before their birth. It’s a touching glimpse into the profound bond that began before her child’s first breath, revealing how even this tiny, yet-to-be-born being had a transformative impact on her life.

The author beautifully articulates how motherhood is a journey that compels a woman to evolve into the best version of herself. These essays on motherhood resonated with me on a profound level, as any woman who has embarked on a similar journey can attest to the authenticity of every word Uma has penned.

Another theme that truly touched my heart is the exploration of womanhood. The author delves into this theme frequently, addressing it with a special emphasis on the female experience. Take, for instance, one of the essays titled “Discover U,” where she candidly discusses the intricate balancing act that women often perform, juggling their myriad responsibilities.

She reflects on how, in the midst of fulfilling these roles, many women struggle to find time and energy for themselves, leaving their own passions unexplored.

In this essay, the author passionately advocates for women to unearth what truly brings them joy and ignites their passion.

It’s a heartfelt call to action, encouraging women to embark on a journey of self-discovery, to uncover that which makes them happy and fulfilled, and in the process, to ‘Discover U.’ It’s a message that resonated deeply with me as a woman who has also grappled with the challenges and rewards of womanhood.

What truly sets this book apart is its universal appeal; it’s a literary treasure trove that has something to offer every reader, no matter who you are or where you find yourself in life. Within these pages, drawn from the author’s own life and musings, you’ll discover valuable insights that resonate with everyone – regardless of your gender, age, occupation, or life situation.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, a young individual just starting out in life, or someone who has accumulated wisdom over the years, whether you’re actively working or enjoying a well-deserved break, there’s a little piece of wisdom waiting for you in these pages.

Beyond the powerful themes, there’s another delightful layer to the book that I found enchanting: the charming illustrations. They’re not just decorative; they’re both symbolic and captivating, effectively encapsulating the essence of each chapter in an endearing and visually engaging way.
