“Her eyes are like two open books and I suddenly want to devour every page”
– Collen Hoover & Tarryn Fisher, Never Never
After falling in love with Colleen Hoover’s It Ends with Us and Verity, I made a promise to myself that I would read anything written by Hoover.
That’s why when I found out about Never Never, and also because it was co-written by Tarryn Fisher, I couldn’t resist the temptation to read it. Unfortunately, the book didn’t live up to my expectations, and it let me down.
The plot of Never Never
Charlie Wynwood and Silas Nash were best friends who became more than that when they were in high school. They realized their true feelings for each other when they turned fourteen. But one morning, they woke up with no memory of where they were or who they were. It was as if all their memories had vanished completely.
Both Charlie and Silas discovered that they were the only ones who had lost their memories, and it happened to both of them at the same time. They managed to remember a few things about themselves, only to forget everything and start from scratch after 48 hours.
Now, to uncover the truth about what happened, they have to hurry and piece together their past. Along the way, they discover secrets that had driven them apart.
Now they have to race against time to find out the truth.
Would they finally discover what actually happened?
And what would they decide to do?
Would they choose to separate or never be apart from each other again?
My thoughts on the book
Sometimes, it’s best to go into a book without knowing much about it, and this book is definitely one of those. Reading the synopsis won’t give you many clues anyway, and it might even confuse you more. So, I recommend going in blind.
Originally, this book was divided into three parts, but it was later re-released as one complete novel with a few edits. In my opinion, this change made it a much better reading experience.
True to Colleen Hoover’s style, this book will grip you from the start.
Once you begin, you’ll find yourself turning page after page, eager to uncover what’s happening. The story is told from the alternating perspectives of Charlie and Silas, and the short chapters keep the pace fast, adding to the mystery and thrill of it all.
This is a story about soulmates and the strong connection they share, even when they lose their memories. You can see this connection in the way they behave toward each other, creating a feeling of safety and closeness.
Colleen Hoover has a special way of writing instant love that draws you into the lives and stories of her characters. You can’t help but root for them to be together.
In Never Never, I especially rooted for Silas because he was sincere, loving, and incredibly devoted to their relationship.
The mystery and suspense of the amnesia storyline kept me hooked for most of the book. However, when the reason for their memory loss was revealed towards the end, I was shocked and disappointed. As someone with medical knowledge, I found it to be an unbelievable and illogical explanation.
It felt like a really dumb reason. It was especially disappointing because there was so much buildup and secrets that made me think it would lead to something significant. But the justification for their memory loss was just ridiculous.
Think about the incredible build-up created by the short chapters and alternating narrative, keeping you engrossed and reading non-stop. But then, when you reach the end, you start questioning if you read it correctly!
And the epilogue, the final paragraph, leaves you frustrated and wondering how something can be hereditary.
I’ve read books by Colleen Hoover before, and while many readers criticize her, I have enjoyed most of her works. However, this one didn’t meet my expectations. It was disappointing and felt like a waste of my time, especially because I didn’t like the ending.
There are some readers who have enjoyed this book, but unfortunately, I’m not one of them. If you’re someone who liked this book, feel free to comment. Would love to know your thoughts on this one.
