Influencers have transformed into this new, emerging profession that, if you inquire, most young people express a desire to pursue. Yet, have you ever wondered what life is like for an influencer? The tremendous pressure they endure as they navigate the demands of both the on-screen and off-screen worlds in search of balance is truly intriguing.
Personally, I’m deeply captivated by this subject, prompting me to quickly acquire a book on the topic. What made it even more enticing was the book’s stunning cover and its vibrant, appealing appearance.
What’s the plot like?
Almond Brown, a mixed-race teen, has always had her life broadcasted across social media. It began with her mom, who started sharing her journey from Almond’s babyhood, and now it’s her daily vegan lifestyle that’s showcased with the perfect filters. The rewards are truly splendid, especially for her mother, but Almond finds herself discontent with this existence.
Firstly, it wasn’t a life she chose for herself, yet it has become her entire world. This lifestyle has not only distanced her from her school friends, especially her best friend, but it has also fueled anxiety and deep-seated insecurities, all at the expense of her physical appearance.
As the dark underbelly of the internet relentlessly targets Almond, haunting and threatening her, she begins to fear that she and her mom may lose everything, possibly providing the clean break Almond yearns for. But will that remain a mere dream? In her bleakest moments, it’s her real-life friends who could potentially rescue her, if only Almond could recognize it!
My thoughts
We’re in an era dominated by “Influencers,” where many people unquestioningly embrace the recommendations they put forth. But have you ever wondered about the toll it takes on their own lives?
Social media has witnessed an unprecedented surge in recent years, particularly during the lockdown, when numerous young individuals began sharing their content online in hopes of becoming the next big sensation.
However, only a small fraction of them have achieved success, and the competition, constant comparison, and resulting insecurities have left a lasting impact on their lives. “Influential” offers us a glimpse into this reality and sheds light on just how damaging these circumstances can be.
“Influential” is a narrative that revolves around Almond Brown, a troubled, bewildered, and anxious teenager who harbors a singular aspiration: to break free from the relentless glare of the limelight, settle into a new life, and find solace.
Within the pages of “Influential,” we are provided with a meticulous portrayal of the daily existence of an influencer. It unravels the intricacies of their world—how they labor for clients, attend events, all while setting aside their own needs and personal plans.
To me, this book unfolded as a gradual yet gripping YA drama infused with a touch of suspense. As I immersed myself in Almond’s story, I couldn’t help but be perturbed by the attitudes displayed by Almond, her mother, and their managers.
Their apparent shallowness and avarice left a distinct impression. Nevertheless, I found myself admiring Almond’s yearning for liberation from this lifestyle and her pursuit of healthy relationships and happiness.
This book truly emphasizes the significance of self-love and addresses the critical issue of seeking momentary pleasure through self-inflicted pain and harm. Moreover, it explores the necessity of therapy for young people who are at the early stages of their lives, highlighting the importance of finding like-minded individuals who can offer mutual support on the journey to happiness.
Certain scenes within the book delve into darker themes, including self-harm, depression, alcoholism, blackmail, bullying, and even racism. These issues are bravely tackled within the narrative.
I must make a special mention of the book’s cover. It’s absolutely stunning, with its vibrant and reflective design.
I would definitely Influential, particularly for young adults. It portrays characters dealing with real-life issues and problems that are highly relatable and easy to identify with. Additionally, there’s a budding romance and positive transformations in the lives of the characters, culminating in a satisfying conclusion, which enhances the overall reading experience.
I’m certain that we’ll witness more books centered around the themes of social media and influencers in the days to come. However, until then, I highly recommend giving this one a read.
