I don’t usually read a lot of poetry books but this time it so happened that I picked up poetry books back to back.
I started my day by reading a poetry collection titled I Wish I Could Rewind by Dheeraj Thareja. It was a short read and I was done too soon. In the mood for some more poetry, I decided to pick up another one that had come my way for review.
Read on to know more about my thoughts on the book If I am Born Again Lord Please a book that not just entertained me but also left me inspired.
Readability, styling and quality
Right from the quality of the paper to the quality of the binding, font size and font style to all other aesthetics, the book scores really well. It has a gorgeous cover that also adds to its physical charms.
Overall, it is appealing to the eye, alluring to the prospective reader and makes for a comfortable read.
What to expect?
Unlike many other poetry books that I read, If I am Born Again Lord Please does not include a lot of poems. It does have a couple of them but all the poems in this collection are connected.
What makes this book stand out from other poetry books is that in this book, the poet uses 7 different poems (and a few illustrations) to tell us a story.
This story is of love – a love that is lost, of hope and despair, of euphoria and utter despair. This concept of storytelling through poetry is something that made for a uniquely refreshing read.
The Theme
If I am Born Again Lord Please is all about love. At the beginning of the book, the poet gives us a small synopsis which helps the reader better appreciate the beautiful poetry that follows later.
The poetry is not just beautiful but also melodious. All the emotions that are captured in the following poems are the ones that a man experiences in his journey of love (or rather of unfulfilled love) – admiration, affection, bliss, devotion, anger, hopelessness, despair, depression etc.
The beautiful illustrations
According to the information shared in the blurb, the poet loves to sketch. The passion that he shares for sketching is also reflected in the book – throughout the book, we come across some beautiful sketches (that I suppose have been done by the poet himself).
These wonderful sketches do a very good job of complementing the poetry and of entertaining the reader.
What I liked?
If there is one thing that this book is dedicated to it is love. I love how intense and passionate the poet’s love is. The kind of love that he talks about and expresses in his poetry is seldom seen anymore.
Today’s love is more fragile and selfish; it survives on money and needs. In contrast to that, the love that If I am Born Again Lord Please talks about is passionate and all-consuming.
It is not just selfless but also worship-like in its reverence and devotion to the lover.
It all boils down to the entertainment quotient
When it comes to the entertainment quotient, this book does a very good job of keeping the reader hooked.
Even though the outcome is quite known, it is the power of the poet’s words that transforms the book from mere poetry to something that is not only intense but also profound and inspiring.
Just like the many moods that the poet finds himself in, the tone of the poetry changes too – it is sometimes brutal and harsh, sometimes charming and eloquent and sometimes obscure and melancholic.
I would definitely want the poet to continue writing and continue inspiring readers like me with his words.
