I delved into a graphic novel phase during my school years, but it gradually took a backseat as I became more immersed in adult fiction novels. Discovering Heartstopper, however, marked a delightful shift for me, and I’m thrilled that I chose to explore it. The story was incredibly adorable, and I found myself breezing through it with a constant smile on my face.
The plot of Heartstopper
Charlie Spring, an openly gay student in year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys, faced bullying before coming out to the entire school a year ago. Now, the dust has settled. Nick Nelson, a Year 11 student and a member of the school’s rugby team, crosses paths with Charlie.
From the very first day, Charlie and Nick hit it off, and their friendship flourishes. As they spend more time together, Charlie finds himself falling hard for Nick. The question lingers: does he stand a chance with Nick? Can Nick discover his true desires and what his heart truly longs for?
As the school year unfolds, Charlie and Nick are on the brink of discovering profound lessons about the true meaning of love.
My Thoughts
Where to begin? Let’s dive into the heart of it – the characters, Nick and Charlie, two schoolboys navigating the intricacies of their sexuality. The journey of self-discovery, the comfort in one’s identity, the innocence, and the tapestry of friendship, heartbreak, and love they weave are incredibly endearing.
This graphic novel, part of a compelling 4-part series, culminates in a climax that packs a punch. The emotions and narrative are executed with finesse. Reading a graphic novel offers a unique experience where a picture truly speaks a thousand words, and this rings especially true with this series.
The illustrations are both beautiful and brilliant, seamlessly propelling the story forward. The depiction of the bond between Nick and Charlie, their individual journeys into love, secret longings, exchanged glances, and the spectrum of emotions – sadness, and hurt – are all masterfully illustrated, providing a wholesome reading experience.
The coming-of-age aspect and the support from their families are handled with skill. Personally, reading this during a mini reading slump and amidst personal challenges proved to be a godsend. I devoured it in a single sitting, and once you start, you won’t want to stop. This graphic novel is the perfect antidote to unwind, offering a consistent smile throughout.
Heartstopper addresses various sensitive topics like self-harm, eating disorders, and bullying, all highly relevant for today’s young adults navigating the complexities of their teenage years. It serves as a comforting friend for those confused and scared, offering much-needed emotional support.
I sincerely hope this series becomes a staple in libraries, providing future generations stepping into adulthood with a source of understanding and solace. In essence, Heartstopper encapsulates love, friendships, self-discovery, loyalties, and mental health awareness.
The series has gained such popularity that it has been adapted into a TV series available on Netflix. I can’t recommend this book and series enough – a must-read!
