Amar Chitra Katha evokes a kind of nostalgia in most kids of my generation that only a few others can do. These books were a must-have addition to every Indian household and every kid’s library. Therefore, whenever I miss those days of my childhood I like to go back to the basics – Amar Chitra Kathas. And so recently, I downloaded Hanuman: The Epitome of Devotion and Courage on my Kindle and sat down to take a trip down memory lane.
What is the book all about?
At about 32 pages, the book is devoted to the mighty and powerful Hindu God Hanuman, also known as Pawan Putra. With colourful illustrations and captivating storytelling, it provides the perfect way to introduce today’s little ones to our beloved deity, who is also known for his unparalleled devotion to his Lord Rama.
A little bit about the story
The book starts with an introduction to the strength and robustness of Lord Hanuman. The story then commences with Hanuman and Prince Sugreeva coming across two young charismatic men who then introduce themselves as the princes of Ayodhya – Ram, and Laxman.
We then see Hanuman quickly transforming into the role of a loyal and devoted bhakta of Ram and carrying out his sacred duties. From jumping across the vast ocean to outwitting demoness Surasa to meeting Mata Sita and conveying Shri Ram’s message, to meeting the famed Ravana and setting the golden Lanka on fire, we see all the acts of the Lanka episode play out quite beautifully.
The book then progresses into the war and a few events that follow later, thereby bringing the book to a conclusion.
My thoughts
The storytelling is simple and effective and the illustrations are vividly colorful and eye-catching. The quality of the comics is good and very price-effective. Hanuman is yet another book in the Amar Chitra Katha series that makes it very easy for parents and elders to introduce our little ones to our revered gods and vibrant culture. The language used is very easy so that kids can easily grasp the gist of the story.
Overall, it is a much-recommended read for young kids.
